Let’s face it. Christmas songs have some weird words in them. And sometimes, if you don’t know the lyrics, you might think the song says something it doesn’t. This is called a mondegreen. And children are notorious for getting these lyrics wrong.
We thought it would be fun, with the Christmas season approaching, to put together a list of some of the most hilarious Christmas mondegreens—misheard Christmas lyrics.
Enjoy these and post your own in a comment below. (Note: These are real. And a couple are hilariously offensive.)
1. Silent Night
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
2. Deck the Halls
Deck the halls with bows of holly
Fa la la la la, la la la la
3. Joy to the World
Joy to the world!
The Lord is come
4. O Come, O Come Emmanuel
O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
5. Santa Claus is Coming to Town
He’s making a list
Checking it twice
Gonna find out who’s naughty or nice
6. White Christmas
Where the treetops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
7. Hark! the Herald Angels Sing
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled
